THE KANSAS CITY HOPEWELL INTERACTION SPHERE
Hopewell communities participated in a vast exchange system with their regional natural materials as trade goods. The Missouri River was an ideal transportation route for long-distance trade.
Materials found at Hopewell Sites include:
• Obsidian from the Rocky Mountains
• Copper from the Great Lakes
• Shells from the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic Coast
• Pipestone from Minnesota and Ohio
• Quartz and Chert from Multiple Regions
• Mica and Steatite from the Appalachian region
Trade also brought stories, songs, traditions, partnerships, and shared symbols—turning tools and materials into cultural messengers.
By preserving the legacy of the Kansas City Hopewell, we safeguard the stories and spirit of the people who shaped the Line Creek Valley more than 2,000 years ago.
